Yesterday Jon McGregor and I played in the Jarvis Cocker and Jeremy Deller curated Be Kinder tent at Edale Village Fair. Edale is one of my favourite spots on planet earth, so to play there was super nice…especially with Jarvis and Jeremy pottering around and DJ-ing full-length Neil Young & Crazy Horse wig-outs through the Spiritland sound system. And next to that: a blacksmith, a trippy school band, and a tractor display.
For this performance I played some ambient guitar to set the tone for Jon’s reading, while Jon cranked the handle of Twinklr to add some eerie music-box themes from the Reservoir 13 soundtrack.
Be Kinder is a wider project than just putting a weird stage on the fringe of a village event. There is a Peak District walk from Edale to Jacob’s Ladder featuring specially commissioned pieces by Jon McGregor, Ruth Ewan, INSTAR, Jeremy Deller and more. It’s on from 6th July to 15 September. Maps can be picked up at the Penny Pot cafe at Edale station, Derbyshire.
